According to “Zhongyao Dacidian (Encyclopedia of Traditional Chinese medicine), Chinese Caterpillar Fungus is a composite consisting of the stroma of the fungus. Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc. parasitized on the larva of some species of insects (e.g. Hepialus armoricanus Oberthür) and the dead caterpillar. In winter, the mycelium would invade the larva hibernating in soil; the stromata grow in summer. It is mainly distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Gansu, Qinghai and Tibet.
